I’m going to look at last summer for and the Peak District for today’s landscape photograph of the week. The location in question was Froggatt Edge, a gritstone escarpment in the Dark Peak area of the Peak District National Park, in Derbyshire. It sits close to the villages of Froggatt, Calver, Curbar, Baslow and Grindleford and is easily accessible via a footpath off the A625.
It’s a location I want to explore much more because of the closeness to both Baslow Edge and Curbar Edge. However, they are also the most southernly points of this kind of landscape in the Peak District from my home in Manchester.
I wanted to use today’s choice for two reasons. Firstly, a lesson learnt. I had arrived a little later than planned and frustratingly the sun had passed behind a bank of cloud. The sky was lovely and there was still some nice light, but after a couple of hours I decided to head home… big mistake. Just as I was heading down the path the sun lit up the underside of the clouds with an incredible red glow… So next time remember a torch and stay until after dark!
The second thing I wanted to mention was the that I’m currently undertaking the Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society or LRPS. This is the first distinction offirst Distinction of The Royal Photographic Society.
I’ve chosen this for one of my submissions and after an initial advisory feedback, i thought i was interesting to see how an RPS judge critiques the photos.
The feedback I received for this image was “This landscape has a good lead-in through the centre and an interesting sky. Sharp from front to back indicating use of an appropriately small aperture.”
A keeper then. Interestingly some of the feedback I received for my other images was less positive. Of course, I'm always happy to take this on board because I think we're always developing our skills and learning, professionally and personally.
Not having any actual photographic qualifications can hold you back professionally I think so I am very keen to gain this recognition. I'll keep you all posted on how I get on!
I hope you like this weeks choice.
